Background Tremensuoli was a small village that overlooked the area that the Regiment was stationed at. The only road that led to it was known as "Purple Heart Alley." The village on the other side, Scauri, was occupied by the Germans. Between thse two villages was Mount Scauri, where there were many hills that were heavily defended by the Germans. This is where the 337th Infantry Regiment, along with the 339th Infantry Regiment, attempted to capture Hills 66 and 69. These hills contained many fortifications and were riddled with mines.

Hill 69 was the first hill that they could get ahold of after suffering heavy casualties. Soon after, they charged at Hill 66, but was met with much opposition, so they retreated to Hill 69. Approximately four and a half hours later, they made another attempt. After a long battle of close combat, where they drove the enemy Germans out of their dug-outs, Hill 66 was successfully gained.

Many casualties were sustained as a result of the attempts to gain these hills, and Besancon was one of them.
