On January 1, 1944, Besancon's unit sailed for the Mediterranean Theatre on the HMS Andes, arriving in Casablanca, North Africa, where they were shortly stationed at Camp Don B. Passage. There were relocated to St Denis du Sig, Algeria, then moved to Port aux Poules, where they received amphibious warfare training.

On March 24, 1944, his unit departed on the USS Florence Nightingale and the USS Lyons, arriving in Naples, Italy three days later. They later travelled on foot to Staging Area #1 near Bagnoli, where they would once again train to prepare to go to the front line.
